This movie has a great setup: Will Smith as a crusty, homeless, derelict superhero with an image problem, and Jason Batemen as a public relations executive looking for a challenge.

It's a match made in movie heaven until you throw an off-kilter subplot with Charlize Theron, as Bateman's wife, in the mix. At least it's not your basic superhero versus evil supervillain flick. Hancock actually does jail time.

The special effects are great fun to watch, and Will Smith is consummately engaging, as always. But it's not quite the film you hoped it would be. Will Smith will still reign as king this Fourth of July weekend, but this film doesn't have the stunning super power of his previous summer blockbusters.
