You Don't Mess with the Zohan
Thu-06-2008I will say one thing for this film: it is an equal opportunity offender. No ethnic group is safe, and all will surely take issue with the latest Adam Sandler vehicle, a collaboration with recently crowned king of comedy Judd Apatow. Apatow and Sandler, put these two comedic geniuses together and what do you get? "Pure dreck," as Israeli hero Zohan would say.
Sandler plays the title character, a super agent who is tired of fighting terrorism and defending his country. What he really wants to do is hair, making everyone’s “silky-smooth.” So he fakes his death and moves to New York, where he carves a niche servicing senior citizens — and styling their hair as well. It’s crude, it’s crass, and it’s not really funny. There are a lot of inside jokes that those who have never been to Israel might not understand, i.e. why hummus is so prevalent and hilarious and seriously, what’s with the disco music?
Mariah Carrey, Dave Matthews, Lainie Kazan, John Tuturro and the lovely Emmanuelle Chriqui join the cast alongside Sandler cronies Rob Schneider and Kevin Nealon, none of them to decent effect. If you make it to the end of this film, you’ll be left with two burning questions: Who greenlit this movie and why?
Rated R.
