21 Is the Loneliest Number
Jul 21, 2008Talk about a slow day at the video store! Are the studios figuring we’re still standing in line waiting for The Dark Knight tickets at the IMAX theater? The only new wide release available on DVD today is 21, which actually makes a stellar rental if you haven’t already seen it.
21 is a slick film based on a true story that appears to begin at the end, but there are plenty of surprises in between as it recounts the adventures of MIT whiz kids beating the house in Las Vegas. The main character, played by Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe), is a desperate student trying to win the $300,000 necessary to put himself through Harvard Medical School, by teaming up with five other students lead by a corrupt professor played by Kevin Spacey. Some students get more, some get less than they bargained for. Laurence Fishburne is the casino security thug nemesis and Kate Bosworth is another student in this PG-13 rated film.
Aside from that, just in time for the latest Mummy installment to be released next week, Universal is sending out Blu-ray editions of its previous Mummy movies starring Brendan Fraser and Rachael Weisz; The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, as well as the spin-off starring Dwayne Johnson, The Scorpion King.
Also, for those 11 people who are intent on replacing their regular CDs with Blu-ray editions of all their favorite films, there’s The Perfect Storm, Kiss of the Spider Woman, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Urban Legend. All are finally available in Blu-ray now, so you can stop holding your breath.
