Your best bet for comedies this week is Will Ferrell’s Semi-Pro, about a slip shod ABA team in the 1970’s. Will Ferrell is great as the team's owner/player/manager/PR flak, and the film has a strong supporting cast that includes Andre Benjamin, Woody Harrelson and Maura Tierney. But the real stars of the film are those 70’s styles, hair dos and music. The film only made about $33.5 million in theaters, which is abysmal for a Will Ferrell movie, but it’s definitely worth seeing on DVD. You might even use it as an excuse to throw a ‘70’s party.

A less rental-worthy comedy is Meet the Spartans, from the creators of Date Movie. They lampoon 300, Paris Hilton, American Idol, Britney Spears, Dancing with the Stars, Stomp the Yard, Brangelina, Lindsay Lohan, product placement, Sylvester Stallone, Transformers, and pretty much every other pop culture target out since their last film, Epic Movie. Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights - From Hollywood to the Heartland is another comedy out on DVD today – the title says it all. It made just over half a million when it was released in theaters – there’s a reason for that.

A good but scarcely seen choice is Flawless, starring Michael Caine and Demi Moore. It’s a subtle caper flick that got a limited release and barely topped $1 million in theaters, but is a good rental for those who have seen it all and are looking for something a little different, a little more cerebral.

The Eye is yet another US remake of an Asian horror film. In this one, Jessica Alba sees dead people. There’s nothing new or even spooky about this, but if it’s your preferred genre, it’ll do in a pinch.

But there are some excellent releases this week from the wonderful world of television and beyond.  Just in time to immerse yourself in the original TV series before the film version hits theaters, there’s Get Smart: The Complete Series. Meerkat Manor; the Story Begins, narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, will also allow you to catch up on the first season before the second starts. And for those of you who want to go way back in time, there’s Mannix, The First Season starring  Robert Reed.

A decent collection is also being released this week -- the Dirty Harry Ultimate Collector’s Edition, which includes all five Dirty Harry films plus the bonus feature-length documentary Clint Eastwood: Out of the Shadows, a 42-page hardcover book, a replica Harry Callahan wallet with inspector's badge and I.D. card, five 5" x 7" reproduction lobby poster cards, never-before-seen production correspondence, and more.
