Audiences threw Beverly Hills Chihuahua 29 million bones this weekend, as the Disney dog flick took a walk to the top of the Box Office hill. That made for one of the best October openings ever.

DreamWorks/Paramount’s Eagle Eye, which was number one last week, was displaced and came in second in it’s second weekend out, with $17.7 million. That represented an extremely respectable 39% drop from its debut. The action thriller has made of $54.6 million so far.

Teen music movie Nick and Norah’s Infinite Play List finished third, bringing in an estimated $12 million. The modestly budgeted film cost only $13 million to make, but Sony was a bit disappointed with its performance, hoping teens would flock to the theaters en masse to see it, and its relatively low total proves that just didn’t happen.

The Warner Bros. weeper Nights in Rodanthe was fourth, adding $7.3 million to it’s $25 million total. Another Warner Bros. film, Appaloosa, which expanded to 1,045 theaters after a two week limited run, came in fifth with about $5 million.

The much acclaimed indie Rachel Getting Married starring Anne Hathaway got off to an excellent start. Although it played in only nine theaters in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto, it earned a whopping $33,659 per screen. $10,000 per screen is considered a strong showing.

Another, much advertised film making its debut this weekend was An American Carol, which made a disappointing $3.8 million from 1,639 theaters. That was only good enough to land it in ninth place. The other ther wide openers did even worse, not even able to crack the top ten. Flash of Genius, grossed about $2.3 million, Blindness made about $1.2 million, and How to Lose Friends and Alienate People only grossed and estimated $1.4 million. The films placed 11, 12 and 19, respectively.

Still, overall totals far exceeded expectations, increasing a whopping 40% from the same weekend last year.
