Beverly Hills Chihuahua Yips its Way to Another Win
Oct 13, 2008Beverly Hills Chihuahua continues to be America’s top dog, ranking #1 for the second week in a row, adding another $17.5 million to last week's $29.0 million opening weekend. People can’t seem to resist the adorable little pup, which now has made over $52.0 million.
Following closely in the Chihuahua’s paw prints, the low budget horror flick, Quarantine, proves that unheard of actors and edge of your seat suspense trumps serious plotlines. Quarantine came in second, making $14.2 million.
Although we had high hopes for DiCaprio and Crowe in Body of Lies, it earned only the bronze with $13.1 million. This isn’t shabby, but it was expected to do better. Leo must not be not as cute as that darn Chihuahua.
Finally, Eagle Eye remained in the top four, barely, bringing in $11.0 million. The film has now grossed over $65 million, but it’s losing momentum, dropping 37.8% since its opening. This might be the last week Eagle Eye lands in the top four, but it has demonstrated a knack for drawing people to the theater.
The audiences agreed with us about The Express — powerful, emotional story, but poorly developed movie. It grossed a mere $4.7 million. Producers hoped it would be the next big family movie, but it falls short as people want more entertainment.
Also coming up short was Bill Murray’s City of Ember, which came in tenth, earning only $3.2 milliong, proving again that people want to be distracted at the movies, not forced to think.
With all the serious talk about politics and financial crisis, people want a more feel good movie. And the Chihuahua still hit the mark.
