Bring on the Tears
May 5, 2009There are only a few new movies on DVD this week, but don’t let that fool you. These films are packed with enough emotion sure to bring on the water works. Find out which to buy, rent or skip the Kleenex for.
Buy it: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The highly praised film makes its way to DVD and its kudos are well deserved. The film is an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story and received thirteen Oscar nominations, but only won three--Best Makeup, Art Direction, and Visual Effects. Brad Pitt stars as a man born at a magical time who ages backwards. As he grows older, his mind and body grow younger. Pitt meets Daisy (Cate Blanchett) when she is seven years old and they eventually fall in love later in life. The visual effects are stunning and help to create this timeless tale. The leads give great performances, but also was the impressive Taraji P Henson who plays Pitt’s adopted mother who took him in and raised the baby as her own despite his 'unique' characteristics. The film really hits home with the idea of just how short life can be with the people you love.
Rent it: Last Chance Harvey. Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman star in this romantic comedy about two strangers who meet and fall in love during the course of one day in London. Thompson plays Kate, a lonely woman who works a boring job collecting statistics at Heathrow Airport and receives constant phone calls from her obnoxious mother and no one else. Harvey (Hoffman) is a man consumed by his work as a commercial jingle writer. He is in town for his estranged daughter’s wedding, and upon hearing she has chosen her stepfather to walk her down the aisle, he heads straight to airport to catch a flight home. He misses his flight and ends up at the hotel bar where he meets Kate, and the two learn that two strangers can have more in common than anyone thought possible. Even though the plot is predictable, Thompson and Hoffman deliver convincing emotional performances to make a charming little film.
Rent it: Wendy and Lucy. Michelle Williams (the late Heath Ledger’s ex-wife) stars in this Indie drama as Wendy, a poor woman who drives to Alaska seeking a new life with her only companion being her dog, Lucy. She then faces an array of obstacles as her car breaks down, she‘s broke and Lucy disappears. The film is simple, but Williams’ is extremely powerful as the film focuses on real life situations and the immense hardships we all go through.
