Comedy takes on the anime undead this weekend as two big-name stars, Sacha Baron Cohen and Hayden Panettiere, hope to laugh themselves right into the number one box office slot and past the Japanese remake of Blood: The Last Vampire.

Bruno is the next comedy by Sacha Baron Cohen, the maker of Borat, who also co-wrote and produced both films. He stars as the flamboyant gay Austrian fashion journalist whose character first appeared on Da Ali G Show. Bruno is fired from his TV show after disrupting a catwalk show during Milan Fashion Week. He then travels to the US in hopes of becoming a superstar. There has already been controversy swirling around the film, but it most likely will be a hit with all of its offensive humor. The only question is will it live up to Borat? We are not so sure.

Blood: The Last Vampire is the live-action remake of 2000's anime-horror film of the same name. The story follows Saya, a 400-year-old half human, half vampire girl who hunts vampires. Her ultimate goal is to seek out the Onigen – the most powerful of all the vamps. She works for a government agency known as The Council based in Tokyo. Though normally a loner, Saya makes friends with a human girl named Alice after saving her from vampires. The film certainly has potential, and it is intriguing how director Chris Nahon makes the transition from anime to live action, which can be difficult. But it also could turn out to be a cheesy, over-produced remake.

I Love You Beth Cooper centers on nerdy Buffalo Grove High School valedictorian Denis Cooverman (Paul Rust), who proclaims his love for the most popular girl in school (Hayden Panettiere) during his graduation speech. She then, by an odd twist of fate, shows up at his door and ends up showing him the best night of his life. The film seems to offer little new material, as the same slapstick comedy has been done many times before, think A Girl Next Door or Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Even with Heroes’ star Panettiere, this film seems unlikely to compete well against all the summer blockbusters.
