Just as Filmazing predicted, Eagle Eye saw a steady stream of viewers this weekend, who propelled it to the number one box office slot with an estimated $29.2 million. The film, executive produced by Steven Spielberg and starring Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan as hapless victims of a computerized Big Brother, also played on 85 Imax screens.

A mostly older female audience spent Nights in Rodanthe and propelled it to the second spot, with approximately $13.6 million. Starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane and based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, its weekend audience was 75% female, and 78% over 30.

Last week’s first place finisher, the Samuel L. Jackson starrer Lakeview Terrace, fell 53% to earn close to $7 million and placed third. It’s made $25.7 million in its 10-day run, and only cost an estimated $20 million to make.

The Christian firefighting drama Fireproof, starring Kirk Cameron, surprised everyone and came in fourth, mostly on the strength of advance bookings by church groups. It made $6.5 million in a mere 839 theaters. In comparison, Spike Lee's World War II drama Miracle at St. Anna debuted in 1,185 theaters, and made only $3.5 million which was only good enough for a ninth place finish. Disney official are hoping positive word of mouth will help the film next week.

In its third week out, the Coen Brothers’ Brad Pitt/George Clooney comedy Burn After Reading made close to $6.2 million, giving it a $45.4 million total so far. Despite the big name cast and crew, it cost a mere $37 million to make, and Focus Features is considering it a fine return on its investment.

Overall, the boxoffice totals were 11% better than they were over the same weekend last year. But year to date, 2008 is running behind 2007 by about 1%.
