Since Lionsgate's Bangkok Dangerous was the only film opening wide this weekend, it comes as no surprise that it ended up in the number one spot. What is surprising is that how little it took to get there: the Nicolas Cage starrer earned an estimated $7.8 million, which wouldn’t have even landed it in the top five several weeks ago,.

The ever-ready Tropic Thunder was second, adding another $7.5 million to bring it to $96.8 million in its fourth week out. Another comedy, The House Bunny, bounced back up to number three from last week’s number four position. It earned $5.9 million for an almost $37 million total so far—not bad, considering it only cost about $25 million to make.

The Dark Knight stalked on its long legs into fourth place, with an additional $5.7 million that brings it’s total $512.2 million—just a little over half a billion. And the Don Cheadle thriller Traitor held onto its number five position from last week with $4.66 million, totaling $17.65 million all together.

Last week’s second place finisher, Babylon A.D. was off 58% this weekend, earning only $4 million and coming in sixth.

The first weekend after Labor Day is usually slow, but this weekend more so than ever, thanks partly to the start of the NFL football season. Total ticket sales amounted to an estimated $66 million for the weekend, making it the worst in eight years.  That’s 15% down from the same weekend last year. Even so, box office numbers for the year so far are only down 1% from last year’s.
