Friday the 13th was the audience’s Valentine’s Day pick and helped make last weekend the busiest runup to President’s Day ever as well as the highest grossing February weekend on record.

Appearing on 4,000 screens at 3,105 theaters, Friday the 13th grossed a hefty $42.2 million. It nearly doubled the opening of the last big horror remake, Halloween, which earned $26.4 million its opening weekend in 2007. Friday the 13th also had the second highest debut over any President’s Day weekend behind Ghost Rider (2007). Horror remakes are extremely popular for both men and women, which made this movie more of a date movie than other recent openings, like last weekend's Confessions of a Shopaholic and the previous weekend's He’s Just Not That Into You, which are aimed at women. Exit polls for Friday the 13th show a nearly even split at 51 percent male and 49 percent female, while 59 percent were 25 years old or older, according to Warner Bros.

He’s Just Not That Into You
had a solid second weekend in theaters earning $19.6 million. The romantic comedy was down 29 percent from its opening weekend. We will have to wait and see if this flick continues to fare well with audiences now that Cupid is long gone.

Taken’s $19.3 million earned third place, after three weeks in theaters. The very successful thriller managed to beat most of the other new releases, Confessions of a Shopaholic and The International. It has now earned $77.9 million total.

Confessions of a Shopaholic earned $15.4 million from audience’s passion for expensive clothes and shoes, but it was expected to rake in more. The female-skewed flick might have suffered because it targeted women rather than couples for the Valentine’s Day weekend. Exit polls show 74 percent of the audience was female and 51 percent were under the age of 25, according to Walt Disney Pictures.

Coraline grossed $15.3 million, dropping nine percent since its opening the previous weekend. The 3D animated film has grossed $35.6 million total thus far.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop continues to be a comedic force to be reckoned, earning $11.7 million while sticking in the top 10 after five weeks in theaters. It enjoyed a seven percent increase in attendance of last weekend and has already earned $110.5 million to date.

The International
failed to bring audiences to theaters earning a mere $10 million. It appeared on 2,600 screens at 2,364 sites. The action movie stars Clive Owen and Naomi Watts who are trying to bring down a corrupt bank, which is responsible for criminal activity all over Europe.

Slumdog Millionaire held steady with $7.2 million, bumping its total to $86.5 million. It is earning considerably more than the other Academy Award nominees such as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with $1.6 million and Frost/Nixon, which grossed $473,000.

The final new release, Under the Sea 3D, earned $650,000 at only 49 theaters. The documentary is an inside look at some of the world’s most exotic oceans. The movie is also narrated by Jim Carrey.
