Apr 13, 2009Disney knows when it has a good thing. Hannah Montana topped the box office last weekend, while the others held strong continuing to please audiences.
Hannah Montana: The Movie debuted last weekend on 4,200 screens at 3,118 theaters to earn $34 million. The Disney tween film stars Miley Cyrus and her alter-ego Hannah Montana who becomes obsessed with her famous lifestyle, so her onscreen and off-screen dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, takes her to Tennessee to learn about the more important things in life. This is the second Cyrus feature; the first, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour earned $31 million in its opening weekend in 2008. Exits polls show that 79 percent of last weekend's audience was female and 60 percent was under the age of 18, according to Walt Disney Pictures.
Fast & Furious decelerated into second place last weekend grossing $28.8 million. The film has grossed $118 million in just 10 days and star Paul Walker has already been hinting at the possibility of a fifth installment on its way.
The 3D Monsters vs. Aliens continues to remain a crowd pleaser grossing $22.6 million last weekend. Its total stands at $141 million in 17 days.
You can also see Seth Rogen, who voices the blue-blob in Monsters vs. Aliens, in Observe and Report, which had a modest $11.1 million opening weekend, appearing on 3,000 screens at 2,727 sites. Rogen stars alongside Anna Faris and Ray Liotta in the raunchy comedy about a bi-polar security guard. It may have had a lighter opening due its similarity to the recent Paul Blart: Mall Cop, starring Kevin James. Exit polls show that 59 percent of the audience was male and 74 percent was between the ages of 17-29, according to Warner Bros.
Knowing slid 18 percent to earn $6.7 million last weekend. The film remains solid after four weeks, with a total of $68 million earned. Also fairing well after four weeks in theaters, Jason Segel and Paul Rudd’s I Love You, Man earned $6.4 million. And it had only a slight decrease of 17 percent from the previous weekend. Its total gross to date is $59 million.
The Japanese anime series turned film, Dragonball: Evolution had a soft opening with $4.7 million. It appeared in 2,181 theaters, but that apparently wasn’t enough. The film used a lot of special effects and martial arts tricks to gain audience interest, but it seems to have appealed only to fans of the cartoon series.
Anvil! The Story of Anvil is a documentary about the Canadian heavy metal band who has influenced great rock bands like Metallica and Anthrax, but has received little recognition itself. The film appeared in just three theaters and made $34,651.
