Heart-Wrenching Tale Earns Support on DVD This Week
Feb 24, 2009There are some worthwhile movies and some stinkers out on DVD this week including two comedies, a want-to-be scary movie and an emotional documentary on a fallen friend. Here's what we recommend you rent, buy or skip.
Rent it: What Just Happened? is a comedy about a middle-aged Hollywood producer (Robert De Niro) and his roller coaster of a life. The film depicts De Niro trying to juggle a normal, everyday life while dealing with the craziness of his job. The film is directed by Academy-Award winner Barry Levinson (Rain Man) and based on the bestselling memoir by veteran Hollywood producer Art Linson, who also wrote the screen play. The film also stars Catherine Keener, Stanley Tucci, Robin Wright Penn, John Turturro, Michael Wincott, Bruce Willis, Sean Penn and Kristen Stewart. It’s a little difficult to have sympathy for a Hollywood producer living in luxury, when so many people are struggling these days. However the film is amusing and offers an effective satirical glimpse into the cut-throat business of Hollywood.
Buy it: Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About his Father is an extremely heart-wrenching documentary that you wish never had to be made, but is a film that everyone should see. It is a tribute to director, Kurt Kuenne’s friend, Andrew Bagby, who was murdered by his crazy ex-girlfriend, who then feld to Canada to escape prosecution. And under Canadian law, she was allowed to remain free. Things are only complicated further when she announces she is pregnant with Andrew’s son, Zachary. So Andrew’s parents decide to move to Canada to be closer to their grandson, despite the necessary and regular encounters with their son’s killer. What this family has been forced to endure is incredible, and the film will leave you not only in a pool of tears, but also in an angry rage. It is a tale of finding your inner strengths to overcome the darkest demons; in this case, the mother of your grandson.
Skip it: Sex Drive is a teen comedy about 18-year-old Ian (Josh Zuckerman) who sets out on a cross-country adventure with his best friends Lance and Felicia in order for him to lose his virginity to a girl he met on the Internet. As expected the journey is a bunch of mishaps with raunchiness mixed in, but in the end all the teens have learned some serious life lessons. The movie certainly has some hilarious moments, especially Seth Green’s character as an Amish farmer, but it offers few new twists on a familiar genre, typified by movies like Road Trip (2000). If you can't get enough of raunchy teen sex comedies, then definitely rent it, otherwise take a pass. You won't be missing anything.
Skip it: The Haunting of Molly Hartley. The would-be horror film centers on the story of Molly (Halye Bennett), who suffers from nightmares, nose bleeds and voices in her head. This is all after she has survived being stabbed by her religion-crazed mother. As the movie progresses, we learn Molly’s parents have sold her soul to the devil. Even with the good looks of Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl), this film is doomed, just like Molly, from the start. We screamed not in horror, but for joy, when it was over.
