Just in time for Halloween: The Hulk, "The Hoff," and The Strangers.
Oct 22, 2008There are a lot of movies coming to DVD this week. Some are scary, two star Liv Tyler, one is green, and let’s not forget about the “Hoff.” Here’s the rundown on which to buy, rent or simply just skip.
Buy it: The Strangers. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman star in this terrifying film about a young couple who plans a romantic weekend in a remote family cabin, but end up finding themselves fighting for their lives as they are terrorized by random strangers. What makes this film so scary is the fact that it could actually happen. It is not about monsters or bogeymen; it is real people stuck in a horrible situation. This flick will keep you tense and holding your breath until the very end. Watch with a friend, and don’t go home alone.
Rent it: The Incredible Hulk. This is the second Hulk movie, remember the 2003 Hulk starring Eric Bana? This picks up where the first one left off, but only in the chronology of the story. Bruce Banner’s (Edward Norton) blood has already been infected causing him to turn into the big, mean, green Hulk, and the military is determined to expose him and his green side. Liv Tyler also stars as Betty Ross, Banner’s love interest, and the daughter of the Army general who's out to get him. This film may not have earned as much as Iron Man, but it is head and big, green shoulders above the 2003 stinker and still packs enough punch to be worth a rent. Edward Norton isn’t too shabby either.
Skip it: The Stone Angel. Based on Margaret Laurence’s novel, telling the story of Hagar Shipley, a 90-year-old woman struggling to come to grips with the choices she has made in her life. Despite a great lead performance by Ellen Burstyn, the film tries to cram too much into just under two hours.
Skip it: Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. This independent documentary film promoting intelligent design starring Ben Stein explores the firing of several scientists in academia because of their acceptance of the possibility of a creator. Much like the work of Michael Moore on the other end of the political spectrum, the film can be perceived as rather one-sided. It will undoudetly be appreciated by devote Christians, Jews, Muslims and other communities of faith, but not by everyone.
Rent it: The Lazarus Project. When Ben (Paul Walker, The Fast and Furious) a reformed criminal unexpectedly loses his job, and turns back to crime. He is sentenced to death after a robbery gone wrong. He wakes up from his lethal injection where he is told he has been given a second chance by God. As time goes on, he wonders if he has truly cheated death or is now part of something far more evil. This film is a psychological thriller that keeps you thinking from beginning to the end. It has some slow parts, but overall very entertaining.
Skip it: Anaconda 3. Giant snakes and the “Hoff” are back. David “the Hoff” Hasselhoff stars as a snake slayer hired by a billionaire to capture an anaconda that might help cure a deadly disease. This movie cannot be taken seriously, although we always enjoy The “Hoff” making a fool out of himself, which isn’t hard to do.
