Madea’s the Box Office Champ
Mar 2, 2009For the second weekend in a row, Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail tops the box office earning another $16.5 million for a grand total of $64.9 million after 10 days. This makes it the biggest Tyler Perry movie to date, surpassing his last movie, Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion, which grossed $63.3 million total. Even with a 59.8 decrease from the previous weekend, it still beat out teen sensations, The Jonas Brothers.
Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience was out of tune earning $12.7 million its opening weekend. It appeared on 1,500 screens at 1,271 theaters. Last year, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which also featured the Jonas brothers, opened with $31.1 million at only 683 theaters. Exit polls show that 85 percent of the audience was female and 74 percent was 25 years old or younger, according to Walt Disney Pictures.
Slumdog Millionaire continued its now Oscar-fueled run with a 44.9 percent increase from the previous weekend earning $12.2 million. The Best Picture Oscar winner has grossed a whopping total of $115.1 million. The $12 million it earned last weekend is the second-highest on record for a film in its tenth week of nationwide release, behind only Titanic, the highest-grossing film of all time, which earned $21 million in its tenth weekend.
Fox’s action-packed Taken ranks fourth this past weekend with $10.0 million. After five weeks, the film has grossed $107.9 million.
He’s Just Not That Into You dropped 31.4 percent, grossing $5.9 million last weekend. It recovered slightly since its drop after Valentine’s Day weekend, when it suffered a 56.2 percent decrease. Its total stands at $78.5 million in 24 days.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop remains in the top ten, adding $5.6 million to its extremely successful seven week run in theaters. The comedy now has grossed a grand total of $128.1 million.
Coraline took in another $5.3 million last weekend and has had relatively small decreases in attendance until last weekend. It dropped 54 percent from the previous weekend, and now totals $61.1 million.
The newly released Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li had a soft opening with $4.7 million at 1,136 theaters. The video game adaptation did not compare to its 1994 predecessor, Street Fighter, which opened with $6.9 million.
Other new releases include Echelon Conspiracy earned a mere 500,000 at 400 sites. The plot centers on a young American engineer who starts receiving cell phone messages that leads to unexpected wealth. However, he then becomes involved in a deadly international plot. It sounds similar to other films such as Eagle Eye.
Also, Crossing Over starring Harrison Ford and Ashley Judd earned $75,600 appearing in just nine theaters.
