Madea Locksdown Number One
Feb 23, 2009Tyler Perry’s cross-dressing performance in Madea Goes to Jail topped the box office last weekend, grossing $41.0 million on 2,800 screens at 2,032 theaters. It debuted with the highest numbers of the Tyler Perry franchise. Perry’s last Madea movie in 2006, Madea's Family Reunion, earned $30 million its opening weekend. Granny Madea is up to her usual tricks in this newest installment, but it seems original enough to keep the seats filled in theaters.
Taken continues to remain a box office hit despite a substantial 40 percent drop in its take since the previous weekend. It earned $11.4 million last weekend and has grossed a total of $95.0 million after four weeks in theaters.
Coraline had the smallest decrease, 25 percent, among the nationwide flicks. It grossed $11.3 million, and has now banked $53.8 million after 17 days. Most of the film’s earnings continue to come from the 3D presentations, which grossed approximately $8.0 of the total. The film is already well on its way to surpassing Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, which grossed a total of $54.4 domestically, as the top stop-motion animation to date.
As we suspected, He’s Just Not That Into You dropped 56 percent after the Valentine’s Day weekend. It earned $8.6 million for a total of $70.1 in 17 days. The romantic comedy may have suffered after Cupid’s disappearance due to the film's heavy slant toward female moviegoers.
Oscar-winning Best Picture Slumdog Millionaire proves for another week it is a force to be reckoned with, earning $8.4 million and enjoying a 15 percent increase from the previous weekend. After 15 weeks in theaters, earning a whopping $98.4 million total and sweeping the Oscars last night by winning eight out of the ten of the categories it was nominated for, this rags-to-riches tale is celebrating its happily ever after.
Friday the 13th’s box office take was slashed from number one the previous weekend to sixth place last weekend. It was down 80 percent earning $7.9 million and has now grossed $55 million in two weeks. It would appear Jason had a lucky killing streak at first, and now the horror-remake is doomed.
Also suffering after just two weeks in theaters, Confessions of a Shopaholic earned a mere $6.7 million, which was a 55 percent decrease from its opening the previous weekend. It has earned $27.4 million in 10 days.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop is another leftover that shows no sign of retreat. It remained in the top ten earning $6.8 million after six weeks in theaters. Audiences cannot get enough of security guard, Kevin James, which as now grossed an outstanding $121.2 million.
Fired Up, the new cheerleading comedy debuted with a mere $5.5 million appearing at 1,810 theaters. Apparently, audiences left their pom-poms at home.
Slumdog and the other Oscar nominees had a surge of audience interest leading up to Sunday night's big event, as movie goers flocked to theaters to see the nominees before Hollywood announced its big winners. The Reader was up 19 percent earning 2.6 million, while its star, Kate Winslet, received the Oscar for Best Actress. Frost/Nixon was up 26 percent earning $653,580 pushing its grand total to $17.4 million. And Milk also celebrated not only Sean Penn’s Oscar for Best Actor but a 21.5 percent box office increase from the previous weekend. After 13 weeks, its inspirational tale has earned $28.1 million total.
