Mall Cop is Champion for Second Week in a Row
Jan 26, 2009Paul Blart: Mall Cop is number one again this week, and the feud between vampires and werewolves rages on to claim second place.
Mall Cop holds on to the top, grossing $21.5 million. The Kevin James comedy has now grossed $64.8 million in ten days. Even with a 32 percent decrease from the previous weekend it managed to edge out Underworld: Rise of the Lycans.
The third installment of the Underworld franchise grossed $20.7 million on 3,500 screens at 2,942 theaters. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is a prequel explaining the origins of the feud between vampires and werewolves. The two lead characters from the first two films, Scott Speedman and Kate Beckinsale, are absent in this film and that overall could hurt the movie’s success. The first Underworld (2003) debuted with $21.8 million and the sequel, Underworld: Evolution (2006) grossed $26.9 million its opening weekend.
Gran Torino made $16 million and appeared in 3,045 theaters. It dropped slightly with a 27 percent decrease from the previous weekend. Although it was not nominated for an Academy Award, the Clint Eastwood film is still popular among audiences.
Rounding out the top four was Hotel for Dogs, which earned $12.4 million. It also suffered a 27 percent decrease, and now has a grand total of $37 million in ten days.
Slumdog Millionaire jumped from tenth to fifth place this past weekend grossing $10.6 million. It had an 80 percent increase after expanding to 1,411 theaters. It just picked up another award, SAG’s Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, and has been nominated for 10 Academy Awards. The drama has now grossed an outstanding $55.9 million.
My Bloody Valentine 3D continued to attract customers with its frightening 3D presentations earning $10 million. After two weeks in theaters, it has grossed $37.7 million.
However, the fantasy-novel-turned-feature film, Inkheart, failed to enchant audiences with a mere $7.7 million. Although it hoped to be as successful as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, its slow start says otherwise. It may have been hurt by the fact that t’s vaguely similar to Bedtime Stories, starring Adam Sandler, which is also a film about bringing fiction to life.
Notorious, the biography of murdered rapper Biggie Smalls, dropped 72 from the previous weekend earning just $5.7 million. With a grand total of $31.8 million thus far, its initial success could have been due to diehard fans of the rapper flocking to theaters on its opening weekend.
The Weinstein Company’s Killshot opened this past weekend in only five theaters and grossed $10,000. The film stars Diane Lane and Thomas Jane as a couple who must enter the witness protection program after identifying a criminal, Mickey Rourke. Although it was supposed to go straight to DVD in July 2008, it was then ressurrected and released in a limited number of theaters.
