With no new nationwide releases over the New Year’s weekend, the Christmas openers held strong for a second week; Marley being the top dog.

Marley & Me grossed $24.1 million on 4,500 screens in 3,505 theaters. The comedy currently ranks as the third highest-grossing dog movie ever. Even though it is down 34 percent since last week, it has earned $106.5 million in 11 days and continued last weekend to be an audience favorite.

Bedtime Stories earned $20.3 million to push its total to $85.4 million over 11 days. Adam Sandler stars in his first picture with Disney that brings bedtime stories to life. The film appeared on 4,900 screens at 3,684 theaters.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button fell 31 percent from the previous week, grossing $18.4 million this past weekend. It has now earned $79 million in its 11 days in theaters. The Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett drama had already been nominated for several Golden Globes.

Valkyrie, the Tom Cruise World War II thriller, grossed $14 million, which was a 33 percent decrease from the previous weekend. The film appeared on 2,900 screens in 2,778 theaters. Its grand total is now $60.7 million over 11 days.

Yes Man held its own with $13.9 million after three weeks in theaters. Jim Carrey’s comedy has made $79.4 million in 17 days, which is close to Carrey’s 2005 Fun with Dick and Jane at the same point, which earned $81.1 million after three weeks.

Will Smith’s Seven Pounds continued to drop, down 24 percent, earning $10 million last weekend. It has earned a mediocre $60 million in its 17 days in theaters.

Slumdog Millionaire is the only nationwide release that increased its weekend take, up 11 percent adding $4.8 million to its total of $28.8 million. It has been slowly opening across the country, and after eight weeks, it appeared in 612 theaters over the weekend. This underdog film has proven to be a contender with other high profile films.

Twilight and Bolt remain steady; both have been in theaters for seven weeks. Twilight grossed $4.5 million for a whopping total of $176.8 million in 45 days. The vampire romance has swept the nation, becoming a cultural icon with die-hard fans who seem to still be supporting the film. Bolt earned $3.3 million this weekend, down three percent from last week, for a seven-week total of $109.9 million.

The Spirit tanked in its second week; it dropped 49 percent earning a mere $3.3 million for a total of $17.8 million in 11 days.

However, Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino rose 21 percent to gross $2.8 million showing at only 84 sites. It has earned $9.7 million after four weeks and is scheduled to expand to 2,600 theaters on January 9th.

Defiance starring Daniel Craig appeared in two theaters and earned $121,000 with an average of $60,500 per theater. Per screen it out earned Revolutionary Road, which grossed $979,000 in 38 sites, or an average of $25,763 per theater.
