Mixed-Emotions This Weekend
Jun 25, 2009This weekend’s releases could get under your skin in more ways than one. They may give you chills or thrills, or make you tear or fear. Here’s a rundown require a box of tissues or bring a date to hold onto. f
My Sister’s Keeper is the emotional tale of a mother who genetically creates a child to save the life of her first born daughter, diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. The film is an adaptation from the international bestseller of the same name by Jodi Picoult and stars Cameron Diaz, Abigail Breslin and Sofia Vassilieva. Our suggestion is to bring lots of tissues. This film is sure to make even the strongest macho man cry like a little girl. Read the cast’s comments about their experiences with working on this emotional film.
Cheri is set in the 1900s in Paris and tells the story about an unlikely six-year affair that occurs between a retired courtesan (Michelle Pfeiffer) and a spoiled young man, Cheri (Rupert Friend). Cheri is pawned off to the courtesan so she can teach the naïve boy about women, since she was a well known socialite. But the two turn out to be a perfect match and fall in love. However, there are heavy consequences for the pair's frowned upon affair.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen arrived in theaters on Wednesday June 24th. The Michael Bay sequel reprises Shia LaBeouf’s role as hero Sam Witwicky who helped save the world from the evil Megatron in the first film. He now returns, a freshman in college, but once again is in the middle of the battle between the Decepticons and Autobots. Megan Fox also returns as his good-looking girlfriend, and the pair must help save the world, again. The film is sure to be a hit regardless of plot, since it has an all-star director and legendary producer, Steven Spielberg. Also, it has plenty of action and explosives, along with a few Josh Duhamel cameos, is sure to attract audiences to the theater.
Surveillance is an independent thriller that follows two FBI agents (Julie Ormond, Bill Pullman) as they investigate a series of murders and a missing woman. After interviewing three eyewitnesses (a corrupt police officer, a meth-addict and an 8-year-old girl) it becomes apparent that uncovering the truth comes at a very high price. All of the characters seem to be hiding something and the final result is intended to shock audiences. This is the second feature film by Jennifer Lynch (Boxing Helena), the daughter of filmmaker David Lynch (The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet). The film sounds like a roller coaster ride and hopefully it can deliver as many thrills and chills as it boasts.
