Moviegoers Get A Smart Start, but Show No Love for the Guru
Jun 23, 2008Get Smart controlled the box office this weekend, sucking the karma right out of rival comedy The Love Guru. The spy spoof starring Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway grossed an estimated $39.1 million over the weekend, enough for there to already be talk of a new film franchise.
Meanwhile, The Love Guru didn’t even take sloppy seconds. It’s estimated $14 million take was only enough to take fourth place. It’s one of Myers’ worst openings in years.
Paramount is doubtlessly glad it only spent $60 million on what is now considered an official flop, but the studio is shedding no tears over its latest release’s box office performance. Kung Fu Panda, another Paramount release, came in second again this week, adding another $ 12.7 million to its $155.5 million domestic total so far.
Another cause to celebrate for Paramount was the fact that Iron Man crossed the $300 million mark on Wednesday. Its official domestic total is approximately $305 million, and it finished in ninth place this weekend, its seventh week in theaters.
Universal’s The Incredible Hulk almost tied for the second spot with Kung Fu Panda, but finished third with an additional $21.5 million.
M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening fell from third place to fifth this weekend, with an additional $10 million added to its $50.3 million total so far. The film had only a $60 million dollar budget, which should soon be recouped.
At this point, things are looking up for Hollywood this summer. Ticket sales have outperformed those of last summer for four straight weeks. This weekend alone brought in six percent more than the same frame last year, when, interestingly enough, another Steve Carell movie, Evan Almighty, opened in the number one slot with $31.2 million.
