New on DVD: A Pregnancy Spoof and a Kung Fu Kingdom
Sep 9, 2008There’s a substantial amount of quality, if not quantity, out on DVD this week. A fantastical martial arts movie and a Tina Fey comedy lead the pack.
The Forbidden Kingdom is a fun Kung Fu fantasy for the whole family. The film stars Jet Li and Jackie Chan, and includes fantastic marshal arts, a monkey king, legendary immortals, a strong, fighting female hero, a demon with lethal hair and just a hint of romance. They're all wrapped together in English, with a story about a misfit Boston kid (Michael Angarano) who travels through a magical gate, back to a mythical China where he must deliver a super power sword to its rightful owner. Jackie Chan plays his drunken mentor, and Jet Li is a monk who helps him on his journey. Look for them both in other roles, under heavy makeup. Better keep your eye on the kids whilewatching this film, however – they’re sure to be thrusting and jabbing and flipping and twisting like Samurai warriors.
You’ll probably be pleasantly surprised by the film Baby Mama if you haven’t seen it yet. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler star in this female buddy comedy (of which there are not nearly enough) that is tender, twisty and funny without being gross. The cast includes Steve Martin, Greg Kinnear, Dax Sheperd, Romany Malco, Taylor Holland, Sigourney Weaver, Maura Tierney and John Hodgman (the pasty, bespeckled PC guy in the Mac commercials). The plot revolves around an uptight and inconceivable business woman hiring a "culturally challenged" bleach blonde to birth her baby. No chick flick this, anyone over 15, regardless of gender, will probably enjoy it.
A somewhat more obscure video new on DVD this week is The Fall, described as an “avalanche of wild images.” It’s about a stunt man (Lee Pace) who lands in the hospital, and starts spinning vivid tales about five mythical heroes for a young girl who is a fellow patient. Fact and fantasy blur. This is no children’s film, however. Violent images have earned it an R rating.
