New to DVD this Week: Action-Packed vs. Juvenile Jokes
Dec 2, 2008This week's DVDs feature childish antics between step brothers, assassins who kill in the name of justice, and a second feature film attempting to tap the popularity of The X-Files TV series. All of the different plot lines could make it confusing to decide. So let us help you discover which to rent, buy or skip.
Rent it: Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian is the follow-up to 2005’s The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and is the second film based on C.S. Lewis’s fantasy novel series. The four Pevensie children, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy, return to Narnia to assist Prince Caspian in his fight to win back his throne from his corrupt uncle, King Miraz. The second film has a darker tone then the first, and also supplies more action including a sequence created just for the movie. The second installment of The Chronicles of Narnia is an enjoyable family film, worthy enough to rent.
Rent it: Step Brothers: Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly star in the comedy about two unemployed middle-aged men who are forced to live together as stepbrothers after their parents get married. This is the second time Reilly and Ferrell have teamed up; they appeared together in Talladega Nights (2006). The stupid immature rivalry between brothers is hilarious at the beginning of the film, but loses momentum as the film goes on. Be prepared to laugh at loud during the opening scenes, and be staring at the clock by the end of the film. Ferrell and Reilly are great comedians, but we are afraid they need to get some new material.
Rent it: Wanted: This action film stars Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman, James McAvoy, Thomas Kretchman and Terence Stamp. The movie is loosely based on the comic-book miniseries by Mark Miller, and Timur Bekmambetov, director of the popular Russian fantasy film series, Night Watch, directed the film. This is Bekmambetov’s Hollywood debut, and the movie was a success in theaters, grossing $341.7 million worldwide. The main character Wes Gibson played by McAvoy lives a pretty bleak existence. He works at dead-end job, takes anti-anxiety medications and his girlfriend routinely cheats on him with his best friend. After his estranged father is murdered, Wes becomes involved in a secret society of assassins, including the beautiful seductive Fox, played by Angelina Jolie. Wes then learns he is destined for more than working as an accountant, and must balance his need to avenge his father's death and justice. A mixture of Fight Club and The Matrix, Wanted is a wild ride from start to finish, with some explosive action scenes you can’t deny are pretty impressive.
Skip it: The X-Files: I Want to Believe: The second feature film based on the popular award-winning TV series, The X-Files, stars the infamous FBI agents, David Duchovny as Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully. The film was scheduled to be originally released in 2001, following the ninth season of the TV show, but it took six years for the film to finally be released in July 2008. Scully, who is now working as a staff physician and Mulder is a fugitive, reunite on a case involving the disappearance of several women. There are some twists and turns throughout the movie, but some things never change; Scully still has trouble believing in the paranormal and Mulder is slightly obsessed with the idea of the extra-terrestrial. Even fans, who want to believe the movie is fun, will quickly find out this flick is an outdated, half-hearted attempt to compete with the classic TV series.
