New to DVD: Zack and Miri, Nick & Norah, Dakota Fanning
Feb 4, 2009All but one of this week’s crop of DVDs get a thumbs up. With those odds, it’s going to be tough to decide which DVD to watch first.
Rent it: Zack and Miri Make a Porno is the Kevin Smith project starring Elizabeth Banks (as Miri) and Seth Rogen (Zach) as two lifelong friends who decide to solve their cash flow problems by making a pornographic film together. Although the movie is crude and the amount of foul language and nudity is immeasurable, there is something very sincere about this film. As it wears on, it begins to grow on you, partly because of the love story that develops between Zack and Miri. This is not a big shock, but it provides a relatability factor for audiences. It also holds up well against Smith’s other movies, Mallrats (1995) and Clerks II (2006) which maintain the common theme of putting average people in ridiculous situations.
Rent it: The Secret Life of Bees centers on a young girl named Lily (Dakota Fanning) who is struggling to deal with her mother’s death. She flees her home with her caregiver (Jennifer Hudson) to the small South Carolina town where her mother was from. There, she befriends the Boatwright sisters, and learns about beekeeping. Fanning delivers a great performance, and it is refreshing to see a chick flick that is more than shopping. The heartwarming tale can be a little too sweet at times, but overall is an intriguing story.
Rent it: Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist is a quirky film about Nick (Michael Cera) who has recently gotten dumped by his girlfriend. And then she suddenly appears at his garage band’s show. Surprised he runs into Norah (Kat Dennings) and the two strangers end up on a wild, all-night adventure traveling all across Manhattan to find a top secret performance of their mutally favorite band. Dennings and Cera are very likeable characters and the movie is filled with great music as well. We forgive the plot's utter predictability due to the amount of fun we had watching it.
Skip it: Hounddog is another film starring Dakota Fanning as Lewellen, a troubled 12-year-old girl who lives with her religious grandmother and abusive father. She is drawn to the music of Elvis Presley to escape her troubles. But when she is sexually assaulted, she must find the strength to carry on. Fanning delivers a phenomenal performance, but everything else falls short. We also have trouble moving past the rape of a 12-year-old.
