Rainn Wilson Rocks Out and Samuel Jackson Harasses Neighbors
Jan 27, 2009It’s all about big names this week. Edward Norton, Colin Farrell, Samuel Jackson, Guy Richie and Rainn Wilson all have films that debut this week on DVD. But big names do not necessarily guarantee good films. Which stars lived up to their reputations and which should be skipped? Let us help you figure it out.
Skip it: Pride and Glory is an example of exactly what we don’t need; another movie about crime and corruption in New York law enforcement. Even with two big names, Colin Farrell and Edward Norton, headlining the flick, there’s not enough to hold our interest. The film centers on the Tierney family, who all have job as cops, making the scandals personal since it’s all in the family. The non-stop cursing throughout the movie seems gratuitous; not to mention a disturbing scene with a baby and an iron. Norton usually picks better films, which is why we're puzzled by his presence in such a cliché flick.
Rent it: The Rocker stars Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute of NBC’s The Office) who plays Fish, a heavy metal drummer who is abandoned by his band just as they become successful. Now 20 years later, Fish gets a second chance to play in his nephew’s band. However, Fish likes to play in the nude. The gross-naked humor like Wilson parading around in his tightie whities kept us giggling. It reminds us of other popular comedies, like Knocked Up, Superbad, and Zack and Miri Make a Porno; but without Seth Rogen, a refreshing new twist. The film is directed by Peter Cattaneo who also directed The Full Monty.
Rent it: RocknRolla is the latest film from Guy Ritchie (Madonna’s recently ex-husband). This is like a lot of his other films: Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels; full of fast-paced violence and twisted plot lines. The film centers on a complicated real estate scam in London where millions of pounds are up for grabs, attracting many criminals looking to get rich quick. The film is a wild ride from start to finish; though it can be hard to understand due to the heavy British accents.
Rent it: Lakeview Terrace is a thriller starring Samuel Jackson as a cop who terrorizes his new neighbors because he disapproves of their interracial relationship. Jackson plays his character well, and given recent choices like Snake on a Plane, this certainly is a step up. We certainly wouldn’t want an angry Samuel Jackson as our neighbor. Interestingly, the film’s title is the name of the neighborhood where Rodney King was arrested and beaten, which seems not a coincidence since the film deals with racial tensions.
