With an all-star cast and Valentine’s Day theme, the book-turned-film, He’s Just Not That Into You, scored big this weekend, and the other new releases helped movie theaters have a money-making weekend.

He’s Just Not that Into You earned $27.5 million, helping make this past weekend one of the highest grossing February weekends. It appeared on 3,700 screens at 3,175 theaters. The film is based on the novel by Greg Behrendt and was well timed with Valentine’s Day approaching in less than a week. Also, it has a well-known cast including Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Scarlett Johansson, Justin Long, Jennifer Connelly, Ginnifer Goodwin, Kevin Connolly, and Bradley Cooper. Exit polls show 80 percent of the audience was female, according to Warner Bros.

Taken held strong, earning second place with $20.3 million, and had only an 18 percent decrease from its opening the previous weekend. It has grossed a total of $53.4 million after two weeks in theaters.

Coraline grossed a healthy $16.3 million at 2,299 theaters. The 3D presentations accounted for $11.4 million of the $16.3 million. Coraline successfully aimed to please both children and adults along with fans of Henry Selick’s previous films, Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. The film is the first stop-motion (hand-made) animated feature in 3D.

The Pink Panther 2 rounded out the top four with $12.0 million. It did significantly worse than the first Pink Panther film starring Steve Martin, which earned $20.2 million its opening weekend in 2006. It seems the sequel did not have anything new to offer audiences, with Inspector Clouseau’s humor being the same as in the original. The audience was comprised of mostly females (56 percent) and 55 percent were under the age of 25, according to Sony Pictures.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop got bumped to fifth place grossing $11.0 million after four weeks in theaters. The wildly popular film starring Kevin James has now earned a whopping $97.0 million.

The last major new release, Push, earned $10.2 million appearing in 2,313 theaters. The super-power themed flick stars Dakota Fanning and Chris Evans who struggle to defend themselves using their special powers from a government agency that wants to capture them. The Summit Entertainment exits polls show 63 percent of the audience was male and 59 percent was 25 years old or older.

Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino earned another $7.4 million this past weekend to increase its total to $120.3 million after nine weeks. It has well exceeded its budget of $33 million, and continues to hold its own at the box office.

Slumdog Millionaire ties Torino with $7.4 million. It appeared at 1,724 theaters and has now grossed a total of $77.4 million. The Oscar-nominated film only had a three percent decrease from the previous weekend, and is certainly a crowd favorite, sweeping award season thus far.

Finally, Fanboys, the comedy about Star Wars’ fans earned $164,000 at 44 sites for an average of $3,727 per screen.
