The 5 Best and 5 Worst Movies of 2008
Dec 31, 2008Like most years, 2008 brought us a few great films and some awful ones, but most of all, it was a pretty average year. Here is a list of the best and worst. Have fun agreeing or disagreeing - or just remembering. Happy New Year!
The Best
#5. Rambo – This is a huge surprise considering that Sylvester Stallone is in his sixties and the thought of him being able to take on an entire Burmese army is well, not so believable. However, Stallone gives us a plausible and effective story that delivers what it promises – hardcore action and violence. This fourth installment in the franchise also offers a lot of heart as it brings us to a part of the world barely known by westerners. It is old fashioned good vs. evil and we cheer when Rambo rescues some Christian missionaries from sadistic, cold blooded killers.
#4. Kung Fu Panda – Jack Black is the voice of the soup selling Panda who longs to be a martial arts expert. The movie is colorful and vibrant with a refreshingly original tale to tell. Sure to be a classic, Kung Fu Panda is a treat for the whole family.
#3. Slumdog Millionaire – You've never seen a film like this one. A young man is a contestant on the Hindi version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.” Jamal knows a surprising number of the answers and is under suspicion for cheating. The film then takes us throughout his life in a series of flashbacks which shows us why he knows the answers. It all ties beautifully together in the end.
#2. Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed – Ben Stein will make you a believer in the number one documentary in the country. He turns the table on “big science” and shows us just how foolish some of the world's leading atheists really are. Stein also emphasizes a surprising link between Nazism and evolution. He does it with class and he does it with style. Don't miss one of the most entertaining films of this past year.
#1. The Dark Knight – If you haven't seen it by now, you must have heard the buzz. This second chapter of the reinvented Batman saga is even better than the first. I am sure you have also heard about the late Heath Ledger's brilliant performance as the Joker. It lives up to the hype, but so does the movie itself. A great crime drama, a thrilling action film, and in my opinion, the best movie of 2008.
The Worst
#5. Mamma Mia – My family disagrees with me, but oh well, this is almost unbearable for viewing. Remember when you had to be a good singer to be in a musical? Apparently, not anymore. Meryl Streep is uncomfortable to watch as she dances and prances like a 17 year old. And to think that Pierce Brosnan gave up the role of James Bond to do this type thing. There have been a string of pretty good modern day musicals as of late (“Chicago”, “Hair Spray”, etc.). Too bad “Mamma Mia” isn't one of them.
#4. Be Kind Rewind – Even Jack Black couldn't turn in the laughs in this ultra dry comedy. Great plot, terrible execution. Tapes are accidentally erased at the local video store. Black and rapper Mos Def attempt to make their own low brow versions of the films and they become a huge hit. Too bad Be Kind Rewind wasn't.
#3. You Don't Mess With the Zohan – The first 15 minutes are a lot of fun, then it's all down hill from there. Adam Sandler stars as an Israeli soldier who comes to the U.S. to hide out and become a hair dresser. “Zohan” soon becomes a rambling mess. What a surprise coming from Sandler (sarcasm intended).
#2. W. - No matter which side of the aisle you are on, you should avoid this ridiculous movie. Oliver Stone has done much better and should have. A caricature of the life of President George W. Bush, W. presents some great performances (Richard Dreyfuss as Dick Cheney, James Cromwell) and some awful ones(Ellen Burstyn as Barbara Bush, Thandy Newton as Condoleeza Rice). But it's Josh Brolin's one note impersonation of the President, along with Stone's direction which is truly disappointing. Maybe a good skit on “Saturday Night Live”, but as a full length feature, not worth seeing.
#1. Disaster Movie – From the makers of “Superhero Movie”, “Meet the Spartans” and a host of others, “Disaster Movie” stands alone as not having a single joke worth laughing at. This is an horrendous attempt at trying to take your dollar without giving anything in return. Don't even rent this waste of your time.
