There’s a Whole Lot of Fighting Breaking Out on DVD This Week
Nov 11, 2008There is plenty of action-packed material coming out on DVD this week, from the Kung Fu Panda to yet-another Star Wars. We'll try not to pull our punches in helping your choose what you should buy, rent or skip.
Buy It: Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. This superhero film is based on Hellboy, a character in the Dark Force Comics. In this continuation, an evil little elf declares war on humanity and plans to release the Golden Army and take over the world. Hellboy, despite his name, is the good-guy, and he sets out to save the human race from the evil elf and his disastrous plans. This is fun to watch and will keep your heart racing. The battle between good and evil is rated PG-13 and has great costumes and a wildly colored, ornately designed sets.
Buy It: Kung Fu Panda. If you have kids, this film, rated G, is great for the family. The main character is a Panda named Po who is a little lazy, lacks ambition, but is a big fan of Kung-Fu fighting. Surprisingly, his dreams are as big as his appetite, and they come true. Po, the slacker Panda, is inadvertently selected to fulfill an ancient prophesy, which forces him to compete with his idols, the legendary Furious Five: Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey. But, there is a twist. The valley where he lives is also in trouble, and he must become a master through the teachings of their guru, Master Shifu, in order to save the valley from a treacherous leopard named Tai Lung. Can he do it? We think he can!
Skip It: Star Wars: The Clone Wars. If you don’t keep up with Star Wars, or you haven’t watched the other 6 movies—don’t waste your time! You will be completely lost when it comes to the plot, and it will feel like you’re watching a 98 minute commercial packed with pointless fighting. Those who are Star Wars fanatics; go for it! You will get what you have always gotten with this PG film. But for those who have had enough, director Dave Filoni needs to give it up already!
Rent It: Sukiyaki Western Django. One of the weirdest Westerns ever produced, but it definitely has some of the best costumes ever created. Sukiyaki Western Django is a bizarre mix of Spaghetti Western, classic Japanese cinema and Salvador Dali nightmare, stirred up by masters of mayhem, blood and gore Quentin Tarantino and Takashi Miike. The movie is set during the Genpei clan wars of the 12th century. The story follows a gunfighter, who has no name, to a small village in Nevada to protect the townspeople from two rival gangs at war over a treasure hidden in the hills right outside of town. Other common themes that keep a western going: honor, tradition, and loyalty, are all there. The film, rated R, makes for an entertaining spectacle.
Rent It: The Perfect Holiday. The Perfect Holiday is quite the opposite of the other action packed DVD releases this week; this movie is the perfect holiday treat filled with good intentions. A little girl sits on Santa Clauses lap and she has but only one holiday wish: a boyfriend for her single mommy. And it just so happens Santa Clause is single! The movie, rated PG, is built on a sappy script, many of the jokes just aren’t funny, and there is a lot of lying going on during this holiday season. Hardly “the perfect holiday,” but it’s a nice try. This movie has an appealing cast with some seasonal sweetness to it. It’s worth a rental, but don’t expect It’s a Wonderful Life.
