Two Hollywood Legends and a Stoner Comedy Hit Dvd this Week
Jan 6, 2009The next installment of comedic hijinks from Seth Rogen and producer Judd Apatow matched against Pacino and De Niro makes it hard to decide which movies to Buy, Rent, or Skip this week.
Rent it: Pineapple Express stars Seth Rogen as Dale Denton, a process server who is also a pot head. He witnesses a murder and turns to his dealer Saul (James Franco) for support. The murderer is actually Franco’s drug supplier and because of Franco’s accessibility to some rare high-grade marijuana known as Pineapple Express, the pair is on the run from police. Although it is not as funny as what we have come to expect from Rogen and producer Judd Apatow (Superbad, Knocked up, 40 Year Old Virgin), it will keeping you laughing to the end with the absurd situations the characters find themselves in. James Franco delivers a great performance and even though the ending features a gun blazing, violent battle, it definitely is worth renting.
Skip it: Bangkok Dangerous is the English remake of a Thai film of the same name directed by the Pang brothers released in 1999. Nicholas Cage stars and produced the film. He plays Joe, an experienced, old assassin who has one last assignment (killing four people) in Bangkok before he retires. Before finishing his mission, he finds some distractions that could prove dangerous for his profession, obviously a pretty girl to begin dating. The flick does provide some exciting chase scenes, but the film lacks anything unique, and is overall disappointing.
Rent it: Righteous Kill comes from director Jon Avert, best known for The Emmy nominated TV series, Boomtown, and stars Hollywood icons Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. The duo plays a pair of New York detectives who have been on the job a long time, but are still haunted by one particular case. When new killings occur, they wonder if they have put the wrong man in jail. However, the new evidence seems to point to one of them as the killer. You won’t be disappointed in the film, but you won't be blown away either. Cop mysteries are a dime a dozen, but there is something redeeming about two legends appear on the screen side-by-side.
Skip it: Babylon A.D. is a sci-fi action flick starring Vin Diesel who plays Toorop, a veteran turned mercenary who accepts a job escorting a woman from Russia to China. Diesel doesn’t know that she is host to an organism that a cult wants to harvest to produce a genetically modified Messiah. He is attacked at every turn, and must fight to keep the girl safe. The film completely tanks with a lousy storyline and poor action sequences. And Diesel offers little star power. Definitely skip this one.
