The Coen brother’s next film hits DVD along with a hilarious comedy adapted from a Shakespearean classic. Get yourself a warm cup of coco and let us recommend a flick to watch to distress from the holiday.

Rent it: Burn After Reading. The first film produced and directed by the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan, since their Academy Award winning Best Picture, No Country for Old Men. Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich all star in this dark comedy about Osborne Cox (Malkovich) who is a CIA agent who loses his job, and wants to write a memoir for his wife (Tilda Swan). She is having an affair with George Clooney’s character, Harry Pfarrer.  After Osborne’s top secret computer disk is found at a local gym where McDormand and Pitt work, the blackmail begins.  We laughed because it is the Coen brothers, but after the first half of the movie, it is just a bunch of people acting badly.  The all star cast and directors make it worth a rent, but we expected more from this caliber of talent.

Skip it: Death Race is a remake of the 1975 film produced by Roger Corman, Death Race 2000, which is based on Ib Melchoir’s short story, The Racer.  This new version stars Jason Statham of The Transporter franchise, and Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) directs. The script was also written by Anderson, who added elaborate crash scenes and stunt drivers. In 2012, the economy has collapsed, and prisons have been taken over by corporations, headed by Warden Hennessy (Joan Allen). The prison generates money through pay-per-view broadcasts of “Death Races,” where inmates participate in car races where there are no rules.  Statham plays a new inmate who is looking to be the next top racer.  Although Statham is sexy no matter what he does, the film doesn’t have too much to offer other than fast cars, explosions, and violence, oh my!

Buy it: Hamlet 2 is a comedy about a failed actor turned drama school teacher played by Steve Coogan who wants to put on a high school musical, and it ends up being a sequel to Hamlet. The film also stars Catherine Keener (40 Year Old Virgin), Melonie Diaz (Be Kind Rewind), Skylar Astin and Phoebe Strole (Broadway’s Spring Awakening), Amy Poehler (Saturday Night Live), and Elisabeth Shue.  This hilarious comedy not only features a great cast, but the producers of Little Miss Sunshine and writer, Pam Brady, from South Park.  This movie may not be for the thin skinned since it pokes fun at almost everything sacred, but for everyone else it’s a must see.

Skip it: The Women is about a close group of female friends living in New York City working in the fashion world who rely on each other as their marriages fall apart and lives are in shambles. Where have I heard that plot before? Can you say Sex and the City? This is a remake of the 1939 film of the same name which stars Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Jada Pinkett Smith, Candice Bergen, and Debra Messing.  The remake lacks the charm of the original and is simply too close to Carrie Bradshaw’s stilettos.
