Both Wanted and WALL-E broke box-office records out of the gate, as the two films opened so well they pushed totals 21% ahead of the same weekend last year. It was no surprise that the Disney-Pixar CGI fest about a robot-like futuristic trash compactor with a personality came in first, grossing an estimated $62.5 million. But the R-rated Wanted grossed an estimated $51.1 million, surpassing Universal’s wildest dreams.

WALL-E set a record for the biggest opening-day gross of all nine Pixar films ($231 million). It had the third best opening weekend for a Pixar film, behind The Incredilbles ($70.5 million) and Finding Nemo ($70.2 million). Meanwhile, Wanted set a record for the best opening ever for an R-rated film released in June. Wanted opened in the top slot internationally, with $33 million.

Coming in third was Get Smart, the number one film last week. It only dropped 48% , which isn’t considered bad, and brought its total to $77.3 million. The film cost approximately $80 million to make, and should easily recoup its investment.

Another animated flick, Kung Fu Panda, hung onto its position in the top five by adding another $11.7 million to its current $179.3 million total and placing fourth. The Incredible Hulk, in its third weekend, made approximately $9.2 million, bringing its domestic total so far $115.5 million.

And just in case you were wondering what happened to The Love Guru, which opened in the fourth spot last weekend, it fell a whopping 63% to earn $3.8 million and a sixth place position. It’s earned a total of $25.3 million in two weeks, in case you’re counting.
