Who Wants to be a Slumdog?
Mar 31, 2009The Best Picture Oscar winner, Slumdog Millionaire, and the worst dog, Marley & Me, debut on DVD this week. With such high profile pictures to choose from, you may need these recommendations on what to buy, rent or skip.
Buy it: Slumdog Millionaire: This is by far one of the best movies you will ever see, and you probably had never heard of any of the cast before Oscar night. Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, Madhur Mittal, Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan all star in this heartwarming tale. It is directed by British director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later), and is adapted from the best seller, Q & A by Vikas Swarup. It tells the story of Jamil Malik (Patel) who is an uneducated bus boy from the slums of Mumbia who finds himself competing on the Hindi version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. As he continues to win, authorities suspect him of cheating. But with flashbacks, the audience learns that each life experience has given him the specific knowledge to answer the questions. You root for the underdog the entire film, never knowing if he will finally get the happy ending he deserves. The film is a great cultural story that features believable acting along with superb music. The mixture of Indian modern, traditional and Bollywood plays a huge part in the overall concept of the movie. And the end features a beautifully choreographed dance number that is the perfect ending for this incredible film.
Rent it: Marley & Me: This is the film adaptation of former newspaper columnist Josh Grogan’s best-selling novel, Marley & Me: Life and Love With the World’s Worst Dog starring Jennifer Anniston and Owen Wilson. The film centers on newlyweds (Anniston and Wilson) who move from Michigan to sunny Florida and both take jobs at competing local newspapers. They decide to adopt a puppy after learning a particular pup is on clearance, but they don’t ask why. After bringing him home, he begins to show exactly why he was such a discount. He eats everything from clothes to furniture, and has some other very naughty habits. It shows all the ups and downs of the Grogan’s lives with Marley, which spans 15 years. The great thing about this movie is that it's about two ordinary people, living ordinary lives with, of course, a bunch of craziness mixed in. It is a great family film that teaches something about the important things in life.
Skip it: Seven Pounds: From the directors and producers of The Pursuit of Happyness, which Will Smith also stars, is the over dramatic Seven Pounds. Smith is Ben Thomas, an IRS agent with a mysterious secret who embarks on a journey of redemption by changing the lives of seven strangers. The drama lacks inspiration and Smith is unable to carry it. They should have quit while he was ahead with The Pursuit of Happyness.
Rent it: Chandni Chowk to China: Chandni is a very interesting film that offers a equal mix of good and bad. So we recommend you see it for yourself. It stars Bollywood action star, Akshay Kumar, on whom the film is loosely based. The movie follows a simple cook (Kumar) who becomes a kung-fu fighter. The film also stars model-turned-actress Deepika Padukone. Chandni has cool martial arts scenes and entertaining dance sequences, but little else to keep us interested. It had potential to widen the Hindi film fan base in America, but we found it simply a mess. You be the judge.
