Wolverine Slashes His Way to Number One
May 4, 2009X-Men Origins: Wolverine started off the summer movie season clawing $87 million from customers last weekend. The latest installment of the X-Men franchise appeared on 8,300 screens at 4,099 sites.
Its opening numbers didn't match the most recent X-Men flick: X-Men: The Last Stand, which grossed $102.8 million its opening weekend in 2006, but topped 2003's X2: X-Men United ($85.6 million) and the original X-Men ($54.5). The film obviously focuses on one character rather than the entire X-Men cast, targeting existing fans, more than enticing new ones. Exit polls show 53 percent of the audience was male and 52 percent was over 25 years old, according to 20th Century Fox.
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past starring Jennifer Garner and Matthew McConaughey grossed $15.3 million on 3,800 screens at 3,175 sites. The romantic comedy is a parody of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol as McConaughey is visited by three of his ex-girlfriends’ ghosts (even though the women are not dead) to change his womanizing ways. This is a typical role for McConaughey, as we have seen him in movies like Fool’s Gold and How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days. Check out what Garner and McConaughey had to say about their new film in our interview with them.
The previous weekend’s winner, Obsessed took an expected drop to third place, earning $12.2 million. Beyonce defends her man against the seductive Ali Larter as the film pits the females against each other in a Fatal Attraction theme. The if-I-can’t-have-him-no-one-can flick has generated $47 million in 10 days.
Zac Efron’s 17 Again dropped 45 percent from the previous weekend, grossing $6.4 million. The comedy has earned a grand total of $48.5 million after 17 days at the box office.
Monsters vs. Aliens continued to enjoy the softest landing of the nationwide releases with a decline just 32 percent, grossing $5.8 million last weekend. After six weeks it has raked in $182.4 million in ticket sales.
The Soloist eased into sixth place, earning $5.6 million. It appeared in 2,033 theaters, and its 10-day-total stands at $18.1 million.
The environmental documentary, Earth, helmed by the creators of The Discovery Channel’s Planet Earth grossed $4.2 million. After two weeks in theaters it has taken in $21.8 and planted 2.7 million trees in the Brazilian Rainforest.
Fighting starring Chantum Tanning suffered a 62 percent decrease from the previous weekend and grossed $2.7 million. The significant drop suggests this film might not be a knockout after all, especially with the summer blockbusters on their way. The film has generated a total of only $17.5 million after two weeks in theaters.
The Sci-fi animated Battle for Terra failed to save the box office, earning a mere $1.1 million in over 1,000 theaters. The 3D effects and space action sequences weren’t enough to draw in crowds, giving it a less than average start.
