Zohan Proves No Match for Kung Fu Panda
Jun 8, 2008Kung Fu Panda, starring Jack Black has now officially taken its place right up there with Mike Meyer’s Shrek, climbing to the top of the box office heap this weekend with a powerful $60 million. That’s the best opening ever for a non-sequel Dreamworks animated feature. Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third are the studio’s only two cartoons that opened higher. Can you smell a sequel cooking?
In second place, Adam Sandler’s You Don’t Mess with the Zohan opened to a respectable $40 million, despite some scathingly negative reviews. It just goes to prove Sandler’s power at the box office — his films almost always open in the top two slots, making between $30-47 million on their first weekend. Few other stars can perform with such consistency.
Meanwhile, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull discovered an additional $22,805,000, sending it over the $250 million dollar mark, and placing it third this weekend. That makes for a decline of 49 percent from the previous weekend, but against such hot competition, that's not too shabby. In addition, the film has made almost twice that much overseas.
Girlie girl fest Sex and the City took a steep dive from number one to number four, adding an additional $21,310,000 to its total and grossing over $99 million so far. Considering the film had an estimated $65 million budget, it's still considered a huge success, even though it’s dropped off a whopping 62.6 percent. Overseas, however, it seems the rest of the world can't get enough sex. Sex and the City beat out Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull for the number one spot, earning an additional $37.2 million.
Last week’s third place finisher, The Strangers, dropped to number five this week, with $9,289,000, still above industry expectations for a film made for $9 million. Its total in its second week is $37,646,000 almost a 400% profit. And it still topped the much bigger Iron Man, which finished sixth in its sixth week, and added $7,522, 000 to its gross, totaling $288,893,000 domestically since it was released. Overall, the box office was way up — 30% in fact — from the same weekend last year, when Ocean’s 13 and the animated Surf’s Up opened.
