We know Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha – maybe especially Samantha – like old friends by now, but for the new Sex and the City movie, writer/director/producer Michael Patrick King decided some fresh blood was in order. Enter multi-talented star Jennifer Hudson, who not only played Carrie's assistant Louise, but also contributed a song to the soundtrack. She spoke with reporters about her own Sex and the City past, what it felt like to join the SATC family, and how Sarah Jessica Parker...smells?

Q: Had you watched the show before this all happened?

A: I didn’t, I hadn’t.  I mean I knew of the show but I never watched the show and I didn’t start watching until I had to, you know, study for the audition of the film, and I fell in love with it.  Reading the script, that’s what started it off for me...I don’t like reading scripts and I was like, "Oh my god, this is so good!" and I couldn’t wait to turn to the next page, and I had to see the show after that.  And I’m like, Okay."

Q: Did you get that big pink box?

A: That’s what I carry around everywhere I go.

Q: They are fun to watch.  What was the reaction to it from friends and stuff when you said, "I’m in the next Sex and the City movie?"

A: Oh my god, everyone is so excited, and what makes me more excited every time is when I see how it excites everyone else and how everybody is looking so forward to it. And it’s like, "Wow, I’m so glad I’m a part of this. Everybody is so excited," which means I don’t know what to expect. I mean, I know it’s a big thing but people are vicious about it.

Q: I don’t think I was prepared for that before I started working on it, but I have come to find that women love their Sex and the City. Ladies and gays, that’s what I keep saying.

A: Oh my god.

Q: It’s the ladies and gays.

A: I love how you said that: "Ladies and gays."

Q: Ladies and gays, it’s for the gays and ladies.  Tell us a little bit about Louise and what her role in the movie is.

A: Well Louise is a young 22 year-old from St. Louis, Louise from St. Louis who is in love with love, and she moves to New York to find love. And she is a huge fan of Carrie and she ends up helping Carrie, just reminding Carrie of who she is and what she stands for and what she believes in – which is love.  And they kinda-sorta help each other and build each other back up and go on their way.

Q: What was it like to join? Obviously, the people who work on the show are kind of like a family now. They did it for years.  What was it like to join this family? Did the actors make room for you real easy and how was that?

A: Yeah I felt like the baby of the family, and it’s definitely, first off, a beautiful family. I remember going into our read-around with the whole cast and it was just...it was a great energy in the room and everybody was so excited about getting started again. It was their reunion and it was my beginning, and they made me feel very welcome.

Q: What about working with Sarah Jessica Parker, who I think many young women across America would die for this woman? What was it like working for her?

A: Oh my god, the best.  I mean for Louise and for me, Jennifer, it’s like, "Wow," because I knew them as characters. So I’m looking at all of them like, "Oh my god this, is Carrie. Oh my god, this is Charlotte," you know? And I’m still here with them; this is her closet. I’m in her house; these are her shoes. I get to be in this; I get to be a part of it.  So it was exciting for me.

Q: And Sarah Jessica Parker smells good, doesn’t she?

A: She smells good. I love the way she sings too.  I’m a fan.

Q: I’ve never heard her sing.

A: Well she sings all the time, at least for me she does.

Q: How about the song that you sing for this movie, which is beautiful? How did that come about?

A: "All Dressed in Love." I think it was always kind of talked or hopes of me doing something for the soundtrack, and I wanted to do it, I couldn’t wait to do it. It took a while to find that perfect song, but when we found it, we found the perfect song. And Michael Patrick King sent a special message saying, "I want you to sing like you never sang before," and I’m like, how am I gonna do that?  Okay, so that’s what I did. I just went in there and I just went crazy and just started singing and it turned out to be great and perfect for the soundtrack.

And I love most importantly how they tied it together with the fashion and love, which equals Sex and the City. It's all about the love of fashion and the fashion of love.  I liked the way I just said that.

Q: It’s really good.  Finally what do you think people are going to...when they come pay their 10 bucks and come see this movie, what are they gonna take away from it?  Or what do you think they’ll enjoy most?

A: What they’ll enjoy most to me is the fact that it’s so true to the series. They’ll get everything that they will see and be reminded of everything they loved and why they fell in love with the show through this film, and they’ll want more. It’s guaranteed.
