Beauty is Reality
Jun 10, 2009Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) returns to the big screen in My Life in Ruins as a travel guide who has lost her "kefi," otherwise known as her mojo. Luckily, Greek-newcomer Alexis Georgoulis is there to help her find herself and open her heart to love again.
Vardalos and Georgoulis chit-chatted about what they hope both men and women can learn from the romantic comedy.
Q: This movie is all about a woman who has lost her kefi or her mojo, can you talk about that?
Vardalos: I think this is something that a lot of people can relate to, in that we are in a place of career crisis, financial crisis and all sorts of things are happening. We are coming out of the possible feelings of a national depression, a little bit of what happened? And all of a sudden you find that you may have lost your mojo a little bit. It’s not something that you begin the process knowing, but you come out of it knowing, and then you realize. I think that’s what my character is going through. We are not saying, you meet a Greek god and you find your mojo again, although it helps. But that’s what happens to my character. She opens up her heart and sees Greece through his (Georgoulis) eyes.
Georgoulis: It’s very easy to lose your kefi or mojo and very difficult to find it because it’s very simple.
Q: What can women learn from your character?
Vardalos: I will be honest with you, and not to bring things down, but for three years I haven’t been on camera and the reason is because I lost my mojo a little bit. I came through a 10-year infertility battle that just punched me in the head. So I decided, I am just going to quietly withdraw from acting, and I am going to sit in my office and write. I am going to try and figure out what it is that was bothering me so much, and now know what it was. I was taught that if you work hard, you can achieve your goals. But you can’t fight mother nature, and you can’t beat some things. So, I had to go, ‘I see, I give.’ And in doing that, I found out there was another plan for me. I am a very happy, proud mother of a girl that I was matched with, who is so very much my daughter. It is the most incredibly cosmically prefect thing that ever happened. So, I recommend you lose your mojo, and let go of whatever you think is supposed to happen because there is another plan for you. Its message is, ‘Hey, let go, something else is in store for you.’
Georgoulis: You said it pretty well.
Q: What can a man do to help a woman get her mojo back?
Georgoulis: Just to make her feel secure so she can realize and breathe normally. When you find this situation, you will see the beauty in reality. Because the beautiful is reality, it’s not like we make or create something and we say this is beauty. Beauty is reality, and you have to be really loose to see that beautifulness.
