Anne Hathaway to Put on Ruby Slippers
Mar 24, 2009Rachel’s Getting Married star, Anne Hathaway, has signed on to star as the legendary actress Judy Garland in the forthcoming feature flim version of Gerald Clarke’s biography: Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland.
The book (published in March 2001), which is being adapted for both the stage and film by the Weinstein Company, was based on hundreds of interviews plus Garland’s own unfinished autobiography. It tells the very intimate story of the highs and lows of Garland’s life experiences including her very public struggle with drugs and alcohol.
One of her most famous roles was as Dorothy in 1939’s classic musical The Wizard of Oz. To date, Garland's life and untimely death of an accidental drug overdose has only been portrayed in one film made for television in 2001.
Hathaway reportedly will do her own singing in the upcoming film, not relying on recordings of Garland.
The project has already attracted many major directors and screen writers, but no official announcements have been made.
Gerald Clarke’s previous biography of the late writer Truman Capote was the basis for the 2005 film, Capote, which was nominated for five Oscars, winning for Best Actor (Philip Seymour Hoffman).
