Penelope Cruz is Back with Her Favorite Guy
Sep 2, 2008Penelope Cruz has returned to her favorite collaborator, Pedro Almodovar, who directed her in Volver (Return), for which she got a best acting Oscar nod. Sony Pictures Classics will release their latest film, called Broken Embraces.
Cruz plays a provincial actress in the film, which has been described as being in the style of hard-boiled, '50s American noir. Shooting is taking place in Madrid and the Canary Islands. Almodovar wrote the screenplay, and has also cast Blanca Portillo, Luis Homar, Jose Luis Gomez, Rossy de Palma, Kiti Manver, Chus Lampreave, Lola Duenas and Angela Molina. The latter plays Cruz's mother.
The director's brother, Augustin Almodovar is producing. Broken Embraces is the 10th Almodovar film that Sony Pictures Classics has handled. In addition to "Volver," SPC’s most notable Almodovar releases include his foreign-language Oscar winner All About My Mother, his best original screenplay Oscar winner Talk to Her and foreign-language nominee Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.
