Persia Pushed to 2010
Aug 1, 2008Jake Gyllenhaal fans are going to have to wait a whole lot longer to see him in royal attire, as Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have decided to hold the release of fantasy action film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for almost a year. Instead of June 19, 2009, it will now open Memorial Day weekend 2010.
Disney said it wants to allow plenty of post-production time—the fantasy world of the film requires extensive CGI work and special effects. The date move also removes it from competition with Transformers 2, which is also slated to open June 19, 2009. You can’t open two big tent poles on the same weekend. On its new date, Prince opens virtually alone, a week after the release of Shrek Goes Fourth.
Prince of Persia, under the helm of Mike Newell, has already started filming in Morocco, however, and production will soon move on the London. Based on Ubisoft’s bestselling vidgame, it stars Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina. Disney has high hopes for the film, and anticipates it becoming a mega-franchise along the lines of Pirates of the Caribbean.
Disney is not abandoning that weekend completely, however. In a move aimed at counter programming Transformers 2, the Mouse House will instead release the Sandra Bullock-Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy The Proposal. And while Disney was on a date-setting roll, the studio also decided to announce the release of the Jonas Brothers 3-D Concert Movie on Feb. 27, 2009.
