Pineapple Express Stars to Join Oscars Academy
Jul 2, 2009After expanding the Best Picture nominees from five to 10 and potentially eliminating the Best Song Oscar, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, is inviting the stars of The Pineapple Express along with many other newbie actors and filmakers into the Academy.
Seth Rogen and James Franco are two of 134 new artists and movie industry executives who have been extended invitations to join the Academy. The duo is joined by Pineapple Express' producer, Judd Apatow and fellow funnymen Michael Cera and Paul Rudd. Other invitees include: Jane Lynch, Casey Affleck, Viola Davis, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Taraji P. Henson, James McAvoy, Tyler Perry, Danny Boyle, Emile Hirsch, Michelle Williams, Amy Ryan, Tom Cruise's producing partner-in-crime, Paula Wagner, Milk’s screenwriter Dustin Lance Black and last year's Oscar award show host, Hugh Jackman.
"These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," AMPAS head honcho Sid Ganis said in a statement. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks."
The new members, which keeps the Academy's voting membership to just under 6,000, will be welcomed at an invitation-only reception in Beverly Hills this September. The new round of invitees follows some major changes the Academy has made to the Oscars, including the expansion of the Best Picture nominees and adding a minimum rating that Best Song nominees must earn from voters, which could eliminate that award if no song earns enough points to reach the new threshhold.
