Raimi Bringing Warcraft to Big Screen
Jul 24, 2009Sam Raimi, the director behind The Evil Dead and Spider-Man trilogies, has signed on to helm a big-screen version of the online role-playing game, World of Warcraft.
The game was named by the Guinness Book of Records as the most popular multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) of all time.
The filmmaker is teaming up with Legendary Pictures to translate Blizzard Entertainment's hit game and fantasy universe—which follows various heroes on a Lord of the Rings-type quest on the planet of Azeroth.
Helping Raimi with the project is The Dark Knight’s producer, Charles Roven.
The flick will be co-financed by Warner Bros. and Raimi’s Atlas Entertainment.
Raimi’s other projects include Dark Man (1990), The Quick and the Dead (1995), A Simple Plan (1998), For Love of the Game (1999), The Gift (2000) and Drag Me to Hell (2009).
But he is best known for the Spider-Man franchise with the fourth film scheduled to be released in 2011.
World of Warcraft is expected to hit theaters as early as 2012.
