The popular vampire love story, Twilight, has been selected by 78% of participating Fandango moviegoers as the top film of 2008, and has sold over three million copies of the recently released DVD, which lands it in the top five for best first-day DVD sales.

Between February 9 and February 27th, 69,000 film fans voted for their favorite films of 2008 on Fandango’s website. The list included The Dark Knight – last year's top-grossing film with over $1 billion in worldwide box office receipts – Iron Man and Wall-E.

Twilight is Stephenie Myer’s book-turned-novel that was released in theaters on November 21, 2008 and tells the story of 17-year-old Bella Stewart, played by Kristen Stewart, who moves to the small town of Forks, Washington to live with her father. She then meets a mysterious, pale teenager named Edward Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson, who she is immediately drawn too and falls in love with. Then she finds out that Edward and his family are vampires, and Edward must find a way to keep his human love safe as a group of evil vampires come to town.

The award will be presented to Summit Entertainment, the studio that produced Twilight, at ShoWest, the world’s largest theatrical convention, on April 2 in Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, Summit’s release of the Twilight DVD on Saturday March 21st, sold over three million copies. Despite the popularity of the theatrical release and various "Twilight at Midnight” DVD release events held in cities across the country, Twilight's first-day DVD sales rank only fifth among blockbusters that bowed over the past two years. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, The Dark Knight, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and Transformers all outsold the Twilight DVD in their first day on sale.

New Moon, the Twilight sequel set for release on November 20, is among 2009's most anticipated movies, according to a recent Fandango survey.
