That Will Smith would score another huge opening Fourth of July weekend with Hancock was no surprise, but just how successful the film was might be, considering its relatively poor reception.

Domestically, Hancock earned $103.9 million over five and a half days, earning it the third-biggest Fourth of July opening weekend ever, behind Transformers (2007) and Spiderman 2 (2004). Smith, of course, is no stranger to big Independence Day weekends, going back to his 1996 movie titled just that, one of five Smith films in all that opened over the holiday weekend.

Hancock is his most successful July Fourth film to date, as well as the eighth of his films to open at No. 1 in the U.S. Though Hancock undoubtedly proves Will Smith’s box office mojo, it was likely helped by a lack of solid competition, particularly when it comes to other big-budget blockbusters. The only other major release of the weekend was Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, a movie based on a popular doll line, and the weekend’s second most popular movie was WALL-E, a Pixar animated movie in theaters for its second week.
